If I were Athena

If I were Athena,
I would never give the shield to Perseus
and let him tear Medusa.
I would never carry her head like a trophy.
I wouldn’t let fellow women be trampled
just to flaunt my strength
for men to admire.
No, I wouldn’t even cast wrath,
and let others clean up my mess—
Aegis should have never existed.

If I were Athena,
I wouldn’t let them call me
the goddess of wisdom
until I sat beside Medusa,
listened to her story,
told her none of it was her fault—
not for simply being—
and asked whether she wanted
to chain Poseidon to the ocean floor,
til he became as powerless as mortals,
and fought beside her
for justice.

Athena was my heroine—
until she became the monster
the day I learned Medusa’s name.
All my life, I’ve met Athenas
in women who’ve climbed the ladder,
won applause
for strength built on silence,
and silencing…

…that I keep watching my reflection
in the mirror,
searching for Athena in me—
and if I find her,
I’ll look into my eyes
until I turn to stone.

  1. My Greek Mythology is more dated than most of my poetry. Thanks for writing this with enough allusions or prompts to cut through my mental fog bank. This is a great bundle of mythology paralleling reality with a constant batch of ji-ji style gentle parody and plane metaphor tossed into the salad. I particularly like the wondering Methuselah and Athena staring blankly towards their opposing fate. Or maybe wondering who the author of their existence may be.

    1. Naah but there are many beautiful and exotic homestays that surely love cats there (and are much cheaper)!

  4. I just wanted to let you know that mentioned this site, and anothers, on my own torn words blog, only as people I had followed a long time. Keep up the good work! Publicity is not free, your bill is enroute. Also, I’m leaving Instascam. I had only been hanging there to see that you received that one post. Like Facebook, the content is simply too contorted.

    1. I just wanted to let you know that I am just a WhatsApp away. You have my numbers, and I definitely will respond faster than on Insta chat, especially during the daytime in your time zone. But please don’t delete your account because I haven’t got the time to read all your messages. And I know there are some interesting works of yours there, and I can start working on the ‘A’ project only in the third week of June when I finally get a week’s leave.
